Important Information for Your Medical

Preparing for Your Medical Examination

• Rest Well: Ensure you are well-rested before your appointment.
• Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours prior.
• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before your exam.
• Bring Documentation:
• Passport or a form of identification.
• Current medical certificate, if applicable.
• Any vision correction aids you use (glasses or contact lenses).

Special Requirements:

• Under 18: Must be accompanied by an adult relative.
• Never Held a Class 1 or 3 Certificate: requires an initial examination which can only be performed at specified clinics, namely an Aeromedical Centre (AeMC).

• Revalidation/Renewal: Typically takes about 45-60 minutes and can be done at our clinic.

During Your Medical Examination

When attending your UK CAA medical, your AME will review your completed application form on
the UK CAA Cellma system. The examination will be recorded in the system and any medical issues
will be documented as part of your CAA medical assessment.

The Medical Examination may include the following elements (as guided by the regulations):

Physical Examination
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Audiogram (Hearing Test)
Urine Test
Blood Tests for Haemoglobin and Cholesterol (finger-prick test, eating beforehand is acceptable
and performed as indicated by regulatory requirements)
Drug and Alcohol Testing (mandatory for initial Class 1 medicals)

If the doctor finds you fit, you will be issued your medical certificate.

What If You Are Not Issued a Medical Certificate?

In about 1 in 3 cases, a UK medical certificate cannot be issued on the day due to current or past
medical issues. In such cases:
• You may need to see a specialist for further reports.
• Ensure specialists are able to see you, especially if you are under 18.
• Your case will be deferred to the CAA as necessary
• This process can take from a few days to several weeks

Sickness Management

Holders of UK aviation medical certificates must be aware of regulatory requirements concerning sickness.

Conditions that pose a risk of incapacity must be reported to your AME. Our AMEs can
provide fitness letters for the UK CAA, EASA authority, or employers and assist in returning pilots to
fitness based on examination or received reports.

Over 65 Cardiology Assessment

For UK CAA medical certification, an assessment with a cardiologist, including an exercise ECG, is mandatory for Class 1 certification beyond the age of 65. This should be arranged in the 3 months leading up to your 65th birthday and the report should be sent to us for referral to the regulatory authority. A similar examination will be required every four years thereafter.
